Types of Corona Treatment Pen
Bench-Top Corona Pens
Designed for integration into production or lab environments, bench-top models offer stable, repeatable treatment for consistent results.

Handheld Corona Pens
Compact and portable, handheld corona treatment pens are widely used for spot treatment and localized surface modification.
Battery-Operated Pens
These cordless models offer maximum mobility, powered by rechargeable lithium-ion or NiMH batteries.
Integrated Corona Pens
Built into larger systems, these pens combine surface treatment with coating, printing, or adhesive application in a single workflow.
High-Frequency Corona Pens
Engineered to operate at elevated frequencies, these pens deliver more efficient surface activation, especially on sensitive materials.
Technical Specifications
Output Voltage
The corona pen generates a high-voltage electrical discharge that ionizes the air at the electrode tip, creating a plasma field that modifies the surface energy of the material.
Electrode Material
The electrode is the core component responsible for generating the corona discharge. Its material directly affects durability, conductivity, and treatment efficiency.
Weight and Size
Ergonomic design is crucial for user comfort and precision during extended operation.
Power Supply
Flexible power options make corona pens adaptable to various environments, from factory floors to remote job sites.

Remove the pen cap and briefly depress the tip on a clean surface until moist
Apply the solution over a test area of approximately 1 square inch.
Note the required time for the applied solution to break into droplets and/or peripheral shrinkage to occur. Read the solution behavior by observing the center area of the applied solution. If the dyne solution does not break into droplets and/or peripheral shrinkage after 4 seconds, repeat the test with the next higher surface tension solution. If the solution breaks into droplets and/or peripheral shrinkage in less than 4 seconds, repeat test with next lower surface tension solution.
Do not repeat test on the same area of material.
Repeat Steps 1 and 2 until the correct dyne level is determined. The correct dyne level will be equal to the solution that holds for exactly 4 seconds before droplets or peripheral shrinkage occur.
As a general guideline surface coverage tension should be approximately 10 dynes higher than ink, adhesive, or coating. This may not be the case for every application.
How to Use a Corona Treatment Pen
Power Up:
Connect the pen to its power adapter or insert charged batteries. Allow a brief warm-up period (10–30 seconds) before use.
01
Set Voltage:
Adjust the output voltage based on the material being treated. Refer to manufacturer guidelines or material charts for recommended levels.
02
Positioning:
Hold the pen approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the surface, with the electrode parallel to ensure even exposure.
03
Application:
Move the pen steadily across the surface at a consistent speed (typically 2–5 inches per second). Overlap passes slightly for full coverage.
04
Verification:
After treatment, measure surface energy using a dyne solution test or digital surface energy meter. Target values generally range from 38 to 72 dynes/cm depending on the application.

Industry Applications of Corona Treatment Pen
Plastics and Packaging
One of the most vital applications of corona treatment pens is in the plastics and packaging industry, where surface modification is essential for achieving high-quality printing and labeling. Materials like polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyester (PET) naturally have low surface energy, making them resistant to inks, adhesives, and coatings.
Textiles
In the textile industry, corona treatment pens are used to enhance the wettability and absorbency of synthetic fabrics and non-woven materials. Traditional textiles like cotton naturally absorb dyes well, but synthetic fibers such as polyester and polypropylene are hydrophobic and resist dye uptake.
Electronics
Adhesion reliability is paramount in electronic manufacturing, where even minor defects can lead to component failure. Corona treatment pens are used to prepare surfaces of printed circuit boards (PCBs), insulating films, and encapsulation materials before coating, soldering, or bonding.
Automotive Industry
Automotive manufacturers rely on corona treatment pens to improve the adhesion of paints, primers, and adhesives on plastic and composite components. Parts such as bumpers, dashboards, trim panels, and light housings are often made from polypropylene or TPO (thermoplastic olefin), which are difficult to bond without surface activation.
Medical Devices
In the medical field, surface properties directly impact biocompatibility, sterilization efficacy, and device functionality. Corona treatment pens are used to modify the surfaces of implants, catheters, diagnostic tools, and drug delivery systems to improve cell adhesion or coating uniformity.
Wood and Paper Products
While wood and paper are naturally porous, certain finishes and coatings require enhanced surface energy for optimal performance. In wood processing, corona pens are used to treat engineered wood, MDF, or sealed surfaces before applying varnishes, laminates, or digital prints.
